Highland AMVETS February Meeting: New Members, Guest Speakers, Heartfelt Prayers

Yesterday evening, Highland AMVETS held another successful meeting with camaraderie and learning, all while nurturing our veteran community. Among the highlights were a fantastic dinner from Moogie's Barbeque, the addition of four new post members, and presentations from three knowledgeable guest speakers.

Moogie's Barbeque!

Highland AMVETS hosted the evening meeting with a delicious dinner from Moogie's Barbeque. Moogie's excels in comfort food, and the meal did not disappoint as we broke bread with pulled pork sandwiches, mac 'n cheese, and baked beans!

Welcoming New Members

As we transitioned from dinner to the business of the day, we enthusiastically welcomed four new post members into the Highland AMVETS family. Each member took a moment to share their journey and their service. The introductions fostered connection, letting us appreciate the unique backgrounds that enhance our post's vibrant spirit.

Presentations from Guest Speakers

The meeting became even more fruitful thanks to presentations from three excellent guest speakers, who addressed crucial topics impacting our community:

Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps

First, Steve Phillips passionately discussed the work of Remote Area Medical (RAM), highlighting their mission to deliver free medical care in underserved areas. He provided great information regarding critical medical services across the nation for dental care, vision care, and medical care.

Of particular importance were the free clinics, which are scheduled throughout the year and are first-come-first-serve for anyone who shows up. The next local clinics are scheduled as follows:

  • March 22-23 at Cookeville, TN. Address: 2335 N Washington Ave, Cookeville, TN 38501

  • September 20 at Sparta, TN. Address: 267 Allen Drive, Sparta, TN 38583

VA Community Care

Next, Naomi shed light on VA Community Care, focusing on the essential services they provide to enhance veterans' quality of life. This can be very beneficial for veterans to access necessary healthcare without the usual barriers.

Naomi's informative discussion helped clarify how veterans can navigate the system to receive the support they deserve, making it easier for them to connect with the care they need.

Silver Angels Home Care Specialists

Wrapping up the presentations, we heard from Jennah Borders about the Silver Angels Home Care Specialists program. This service is dedicated to offering personalized care to older adults, enabling them to live independently at home.

The speaker shared that most seniors prefer to age in place, yet many struggle without adequate support. The importance of specialized care cannot be understated, as it enriches the daily lives of seniors, helping them stay healthy and active in their own environments.

First Round of Annual AMVETS Officer Elections

As the evening continued, we conducted the first round of our annual AMVETS officer elections. This important tradition ensures smoother leadership of our organization and guides our mission forward.

A nomination slate was presented so that members could express their choices for the new season of leadership. All rounds and final nominations for Highland AMVETS Post 44 are to be concluded by May.

Heartfelt Prayers for Our Community

As the evening drew to a close, we dedicated a moment to reflection and prayer. Voices rose together for our wives, mothers, brothers, sisters, and children in need.

We had a heartfelt moment praying for a little girl named Nora, who went missing the night before our meeting, and for young Brodie, who sadly passed away in a four-wheeler accident. We also lifted up Craig, Ophelia, Sandra, Shannon, and Faye in our prayers, asking for healing in their lives and for the Lord's mercy with their health issues. If you feel moved to do so, please join us in prayer at home.

These moments served as a solemn reminder of life's fragility and underscored the need for community support.

A Unified Community Gathering

The Highland AMVETS February meeting showcased the elements that make our community strong. With a delicious meal from Moogie's Barbeque, we celebrated new members, absorbed valuable insights from guest speakers, and shared support for each other. As we look forward to future gatherings, we invite new and familiar faces to join us in this meaningful journey. Your presence is not just welcomed; it is essential for the continued success of Highland AMVETS Post 44.
